January 2011 D.C.- Trinidadian

Faithful blog readers:
Thanks for hanging in there and checking in on us.  We've been busy and I have lots of pictures to share. 
For January's dinner club we experienced a real treat- an authentic Trinidadian meal at Lyndon & Katie's house.  Lyndon grew up in Trinidad and since we've never vacationed there, were really excited to see what was in store for the night. 
Bruce & Nellie brought over a beautiful pineapple and some funky dips to start the party off.  We brought a mini keg of Bell's Hop Slam (typical):


Next, Lyndon fried up some plantains and most of us munched on these prior to dinner because we just couldn't wait!
Lyndon & Katie cooked up a feast!  We had curried duck (which was FAB! I loved the spices.), fried plantain, tomato choka (roasted tomatoes flavored with cumin and garlic infused oil), coconut lentils & roti (flatbread):

This meal was filling and so satisfying.  I loved the combination of sweet and spicy flavors.  I could easily get used to eating this style of food.  Katie & Lyndon also said that Rum Punch is standard drinking fair in Trinidad and it was SO good.  I imagined a sugar red punch and it was nothing like that.  I'll have to bug Katie for the recipe. 

For dessert, Katie brought out Sawine which she explained is a Muslim sweet for Eid.

I would compare the flavors to rice pudding. Just a little sweetness to tame the spices from dinner.  It was perfect.
